OUR APPEAL

#MakingSpaceForDisability Across India!

Over 2.5 billion people worldwide—one in three—need assistive products, yet only 1 in 10 have access to them. In India, with an estimated 26.8 million persons with disabilities (Census 2011), this gap is even more alarming.

At Motivation India, we are working to change this. We provide essential mobility aids, advocate for inclusive policies, and build sustainable systems that ensure access to assistive technology—especially in resource-poor urban and rural areas. Our work empowers people with disabilities to lead active, independent, and dignified lives.

Since 2011, we have provided over 26,000 wheelchairs through 19 clinics and 50 outreach partners, training rehabilitation professionals across 24 states in India and even extending support to Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. But the need is immense, and we can’t do it alone.

Every wheelchair, every service, every moment of dignity begins with your support. Join us in building a world where everyone has the freedom to move and thrive.

Dhanshekhar’s Story: A Journey to Independence
Fifteen-year-old Dhanshekhar’s life changed in an instant after a bike accident left him with a spinal cord injury. Living in Koral district, Karnataka, he faced not just physical challenges but also the loss of his independence. Without a suitable wheelchair, even simple daily activities became overwhelming.

Everything changed when Dhanshekhar received a customized wheelchair through Motivation India’s partnership with Margadarshi. With his new wheelchair, he regained his freedom of movement—and with it, his confidence. Today, Dhanshekhar is a food delivery partner at Zomato, navigating the bustling streets with ease and reclaiming his right to independence.

But millions like Dhanshekhar are still waiting for their chance.

Every wheelchair, every service, every moment of dignity begins with your support. Join us in building a world where everyone has the freedom to move and thrive.

Description
Making Space for Disability
Motivation India is an independent charitable trust and part of the global organisation, Motivation Charitable Trust, registered in the UK, an organisation with over 30 years’ experience of changing the lives of people with disabilities in less resourced settings. Since its inception in India in 2011, Motivation India has provided more than 26,000 wheelchairs through 19 clinics and 50 outreach partner organisations and trained rehabilitation professionals in 24 states across India and in neighbouring countries Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Motivation India envisions a world in which people with disabilities are included and fully participate in all aspects of life. While, Wheelchair provision is at the heart of our work—we use a 5 P approach in generating impact: People, Provision, Products, Personnel, and Policy. Through our initiatives we’re trying to bridge the gap of access to opportunities and right to mobility one step at a time! You can be a part of change too, come support us and make space for disability. 1. Wheelchair Ecosystem Development (Swathantrata) Appropriate wheelchairs are essential for the health and wellbeing of people with mobility impairments to deliver fundamental freedom and equal opportunities. We work with partners to train clinical and partner staff to set up clinics and provide appropriate wheelchairs to meet the needs of their users following WHO Standards. 2. Inclusive Sports (BreaktheBias) Motivation’s sporting programme aims to improve sport inclusion in the community by showcasing and cultivating what disabled people are able to do versus the frequent perspective of disabled people and what they are unable to do. 3. Peer Training Motivation peer training is designed to provide essential mentoring and support to wheelchair users by wheelchair users. Motivation Peer Trainers (MPT) are experienced, and active wheelchair users who pass on wheelchair handling skills, information and advice to others who have recently become disabled or who have not had access to rehabilitation services. 4. Parent Carer Training Caregivers come together to build their understanding of their child’s rights, health and early development, and create long-term support networks that improve their child’s care and inclusion in their family and community. 5. Disability Inclusion Training This training helps partners to understand how best to include disabled people in their mainstream interventions in a way which promotes and prioritises the dignity and empowerment of disabled people, but also helps a community to understand how to include disabled people in every aspect of community life. Your contribution can help us in various ways to #makespacefordisability for people with disabilities across India!

Project DescriptionThe project focused on the participation of wheelchair users and their caregivers in the Champions with Disability Race, a dedicated sporting event designed to celebrate the abilities and resilience of persons with disabilities. By encouraging active involvement, the event helped build confidence among wheelchair users, promoted recreation as a means of empowerment, and provided a firsthand experience to caregivers about the importance of inclusive sports. Additionally, the race served as a crucial advocacy tool, raising awareness among the general public and key stakeholders—including policymakers, corporate partners, and community leaders—on the need for accessibility and inclusion in sports and public spaces.
