Dear Supporter,
We are Akshara Foundation !
Our Appeal
Support our vision to provide quality Mathematics education to government schools, where India's most marginalised children study. The most grave issue is that of over 120 million children in India in the 6-10 years age group, less than 25% can do grade-appropriate Mathematics, which means over 90 million children are deficient in Mathematics.
Government schools in India are the “last resort” option for children from marginalized communities in terms of socio- economics, regional disparity, poverty, ethnicity and caste. An estimated two-thirds of India’s children study in government schools. And nearly 75% of government schools in India are located in villages. These communities have absolutely no access to trained teachers and pedagogy nor edtech solutions in sharp contrast to children in private schools .
Our flagship program "Ganitha Kalika Andolana" (GKA translates to Mathematics Learning Movement) targets this “bottom of the pyramid” largely first generation school goers whose parents are either illiterate themselves or unavailable at home to provide any learning support. GKA is a multi-stakeholder initiative for improving mathematics learning outcomes of India’s government school system. It is a scaled up mathematics movement for improving primary level proficiencies and is implemented in partnership with state Governments and has already covered more than 90,000 schools impacting over 5.5 million children in Karnataka and Odisha.
Support us in our mission to deliver quality Mathematics education to every child in our country.

Project Description | Joyful and activity-based learning of Math for children in grades 4th to 8th Std in Government schools. Specific Objectives for Grades 4 to 8: • Enhance the teaching capabilities of educators through structured capacity-building programs conducted at the block and cluster levels using a cascade training model. • Monitor the classroom implementation of Teaching and Learning Materials (TLM) to assess their impact and ensure effective usage. • Empower School Development Monitoring Committees (SDMCs) to play a more active role in school improvement efforts. • Strengthen the involvement of Gram Panchayats, parents, and the broader community in supporting mathematical learning. • Organize Gram Panchayat-level math contests to promote mathematical skills and enthusiasm among students in Grades 4, 5, and 6. |
impact | • Ensured every school in the district has a GKA math kit (one for primary grades and one for upper primary grades) • Ensured every school has at least one teacher trained in GKA • Build a cadre of state’s human resources to provide on-site support to teachers • Mobilise and train education volunteers in the district to support us in implementing the program • Build and maintain a technology platform to collect, collate, analyse, and disseminate data in a timely and accurate manner • Facilitated Gram Panchayat Contests in the district and provide each Gram Panchayat and participating school with a report detailing performance of each school in math with recommendations for improvement. |
Akshara Foundation was established as a Public Charitable Trust in March, 2000. The
organization is founded on the belief that quality education is the undeniable right of every
child. We have touched the lives of over 7 million children over the years through our
various programs. While state governments invest in resources for their schools and
teachers, Akshara invests in programme management at State and District levels. Besides
math pedagogy expertise, Akshara’s core strength is in efficiently utilizing philanthropic
capital towards outcome-oriented action within the government system and communities.
