Migrants from rural India play a big role in India’s development story; working to build and maintain our roads, office and home complexes, but seldom acknowledged by policy and civil society. Their own children are denied basic rights – the Right to Education – as mandated in our constitution. The systemic barriers of access and quality education keep children from disadvantaged families out of it. Children who have been excluded from the education system cannot change course as adults and fall into the same cycle of poverty as their families - making this a dangerously circular problem.
The number of out-of-school children itself is a heavily contested figure making it a complex problem. As many as 1.2 million children from across the country are believed to be out of school in the year 2022-23, as per figures presented in the Parliament (PRABANDH)
We started our first Bridge Learning and Pre School Programs to mainstream 30 out of school children (and safeguard their younger siblings) in Oct 2015 in Government Higher Primary School, Kodathi. Over the years, we have diversified our interventions to include the Government mandated Nali Kali Grade 1-2-3 and help out of state children attain Open Schooling Grade 10 completion.
Today ...
- 776 children are engaging in quality foundational learning in Nali Kali Grades 1-2-3 in 9 Government Schools
- 272 children aged 8-16 years in Bridge programs are working on their learning recovery (includes 118 children in the Community Learning Centre)
- 83 pre schoolers are learning safely in our Early Childhood programs
- 9 children have completed their Grade 10 NIOS successfully
- 14 more children are in various stages of Grade 10 completion
We seek your support in continuing our work with marginalised children and communities in the rapidly developing urban spaces of Bengaluru, dotted with migrant communities.
Let's put our hands together to enable a brighter future for the children of families that help build our cities.
Help us raise funds for our specific needs.

Project Description | The systemic barriers of access and quality education keep children from disadvantaged families out of it. Children who have been excluded from the education system cannot change course as adults - making this a dangerously self-perpetuating problem. The number of out-of-school children itself is a heavily contested figure making it a complex problem. Karnataka’s share could be estimated to be 7.88 lakh children. This is the problem that we are addressing. |
impact | The Project aimed to set up a Learning Centre for Out of School Children around Sarjapur Road. However, the Department of Education taking note of the number of in-state and out-of-state migrants gave permission to run bilingual classes in GHPS Panathur. A. 4 new classrooms were constructed co-funded from a partner funder along with funds generated through TCS Run 2024. The funds were deployed towards the Construction completion costs. The number who benefit year on year is 120-140 children. B. Participation in the TCS Run of the children in the Bridge Learning Program as part of exposure to other opportunities. C. Implementation of a holistic education in the Bridge Learning Program at GHPS Kodathi for another 39 children towards a. 4 children completed Grade 10 through NIOS in Oct 2024. b. 15 more children registered and have given papers towards completion of Grade 10. c. 20 other children are in various stages of foundational learning to bridge their learning gaps. |
Founded in 2015, Gubbachi Learning Community is a Section 8 company* working towards the educational inclusion of marginalised children from migrant families in Bangalore’s IT corridor along Sarjapur and Outer Ring Roads.
Children from these communities are often prevented from attending school due to multiple reasons - from physical access, existing learning deficits and cultural barriers. Even if they are able to attend, non-learning in under-resourced government schools present further obstacles. This leads to poor school outcomes, low attendance and ultimately - to dropouts.
Gubbachi has developed a portfolio of interlinking programmes that take a 360° view of this problem:
- Our Educational Programmes address the spectrum of learning disadvantage and seek to remove barriers to education – with particular focus on foundational literacy and school certification for adolescents.
- Our Community Programmes include initiatives to support the families of students to keep them invested in schooling. For example: building social identity for migrant workers, enabling access to benefits and entitlements, and providing access to quality healthcare.
Since 2015, we have impacted 3,900+ children in nine Government Higher Primary Schools along Sarjapur Road, and engaged with 18,300+ families in around 30 migrant communities across Bangalore.
