MY APPEAL

Hello,
I'm RUPANDE PADAKI

My appeal:
Imagine a world where individuals with mobility challenges can engage in sports. Astha is one such CSO/NGO which is committed to create opportunities for individuals with mobility constraints. One of the key tools that Astha employs in its development approach is Sports, for the transformative impact it can have on individuals facing such constraints.

This year Astha is participating in the TCS World 10K to raise funds for the development of the world's first Wheelchair Tennis complex “The Deuce Tennis Centre” at Chickballapur, near Bangalore. This tennis centre is not just a facility; it symbolises a commitment to providing world-class training and infrastructure for wheelchair tennis players, enabling them to compete at the national level.

Join me in creating awareness about the necessity of sports for people with disability and to develop the world's first Wheelchair Tennis Centre. My fundraiser for Astha will impact and transform numerous lives, empowering them with confidence and self-esteem.

ASTHA
Before a constraint shows up in the world it first shows up in the human mind and eventually exists in the agreements that are formed. The fundamental barrier for people is, this agreement, that there are only a limited set of possibilities for people with disabilities. This challenge cannot be addressed in the same realm of thinking that has gotten us where we are. It requires new thinking. Astha’s work enables people with disabilities, their friends, family and society at large to think beyond the box of socially constructed norms regarding disability and abilities of persons with disabilities.

Exploring potential, living joyously, living a life of complete participation is not even a dream for most people with disabilities. Astha's work is inspired by the motto "newly possible" for every project we plan. This motto guides us to ignite the dreams of a growing number of people with disabilities in India.

Astha's work empowers persons with disabilities to lead a life of their dreams by using sports as a tool for development and by improving education opportunities among Indians with disabilities. More importantly, Astha's work also focuses on improving voting rights of Indian with disabilities. Astha's work focuses on building an inclusive ecosystem in India within which persons with disabilities are equally contributing members along side their non-disabled peers. This approach enhances opportunities for both the groups to know one another better. This approach blurs the boundaries between the two groups to a degree such that engagement between them is rooted in joy, satisfaction, and growth. Discovering challenges, creating solutions and managing delivery of these solutions are themes Astha follows while choosing projects.

About Me
Throughout my career as an HR professional I have been involved with development work with non-profits across India. Through consulting work for this sector as well as for the corporate sector, I find that both business as well as civil society have much to learn from each other. These mutually beneficial learnings have shaped my engagement with both sectors. This year I am raising funds for Astha (http://astha.in/) in their endeavors to use sports for development, with the setting up of a tennis academy for physically challenged children and adults.
