Women on Wheels (WOW): Developing wheelchair Basketball for Girl & women with disabilities by providing appropriate sports wheelchair, fitness training, coaching, and opportunity to compete at various tournaments.
Women and girls with disabilities experience double discrimination, because of their gender and disability, which makes them the most marginalized group. It places them at a higher risk of gender-based violence, sexual abuse, neglect, maltreatment and exploitation. Most families, with a woman or girl with disability, hide them, ignore them and often consider them a burden.
While disability rights are advocated, the rights of this group are often ignored leaving them at a double disadvantage. The global literacy rate is as low as one per cent for women with disabilities, according to a UNDP study . The World Bank reports that every minute more than 30 women are seriously injured or disabled during labour and that those 15-50 million women generally go unnoticed.
Inclusion of women and girls with disability in sports activities is further challenging and the number is too low.
Thus, the proposed project aims at shifting focus on highlighting their strength and abilities by facilitating inclusion in sports.
The power of a sport as a transformative tool is of particular importance for women with disabilities as they often experience double discrimination based on their gender and disability. It is reported that 93% of women with disabilities are not involved in sport and women comprise only one-third of athletes with disabilities in international competitions.
